WHAT ARE GHGs?

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are gases that trap heat in earth's atmosphere and are released primarily by burning fossil fuels.

This results in:

  • Rising Sea Levels
  • Higher Temperatures
  • Extreme Weather

GHG CONSEQUENCES

The earth's surface temperature has risen by 1.44° Fahrenheit. Large corporations are at fault for 50% of that change.

GHG CONSEQUENCES

GHG emissions have caused a global sea level increase of 7 inches since 1880. 35% of the change is attributed to large corporations.

HOW WE COMPARE

In 2019, the average U.S. citizen produced equivalent to around 8.1 metric tons of CO2.

Large corporate facilities anually emit an average amount of GHGs equivalent to 41,193 citizens - that’s 338,273.87 metric tons of CO2 each.

POWER PLANTS

Electricity comes from power plants, the greatest polluters of GHG emissions. They contribute over a billion metric tons of CO2e annually and pollute more CO2 than all other sectors combined.

Power plants are responsible for 58% of sector emissions.

PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS

Oil and gas giants like BP and ExxonMobil are part of this high emitting sector. In 2019 alone, petroleum and natural gas companies released over 341 million metric tons of CO2e, similar to GHGs from 74 million cars.

The petrolium and natural gas sector are responsible for 12% of emissions.

CHEMICALS

Plastics, pharmaceuticals, and clothing all come from the chemical sector. It polluted 186 million metric tons of CO2e in 2019! That’s equivalent to the energy use of 22.3 million homes!

Chemical production is responsible for 6.5% of sector emissions.

REFINERIES

Refineries are facilities that turn raw materials, such as crude oil, into a desired product, like gasoline. Its 2019 CO2e is equal to the CO2 emissions from 412 million barrels of crude oil.

Refineries are responsible for 6.2% of sector emissions.

STATE IRRESPONSIBILITY

In 2005, the U.S. Senate determined that Congress must pass comprehensive climate policies. Since then, only 12 states have made policies with varying success.

LOBBYING

Lobbying against climate policy is a huge barrier to climate action. Corporations spend millions on lobbying out of fear that it may hurt their business practices. Many of these companies do so in spite of their stated commitments to action.
